I'm going up to my parents place today just so I can load them up with my grandfather's artifacts and present it to my dad. He's going to be thrilled. I should do a before picture (beat up cardboard boxes and ziploc bags :-) and after picture (your sweet cherry display boxes). My dad used to love making things out of wood so he'll be impressed and understand the fine woodworking skills it takes to make them. The neatest thing is you made the tolerances so tight the lid doesn't slam down since the natural air escape makes a pneumatic brake. Very cool. And thanks for the best packing job I've ever seen. Dear Glenn Nief

I was recently asked to "guest conduct" some of my own music at Thomas Jefferson High School in Council Bluffs, Iowa. Prior to the concert, my little sweethart, from Omaha, Nebraska, presented me with a conductor's baton in an attractive wooden box.

Needless to say, I was thrilled to lead the student concert band with my very own "presentation" baton, but I couldn't help admiring the magnificently tooled wooden box that it came in. She explained that with only a few weeks' notice, you had fashioned the box by hand and had it shipped to Omaha in time for my arrival.

First of all, please accept my sincere thanks for making this project a priority and my respect and admiration for your superb craftsmanship. I'm afraid we live in a time when this sort of thing can be punched out en-masse in Taiwan or Korea with computer generated designs, and it's wonderful to see and feel something that is still being so expertly produced by hand. You're part of a dying breed of what we used to call "artisans".

One of our most treasured things is the wooden box you made. The box was constructed especially to fit a photo album for my fortieth wedding anniversary. Its beautiful and, more important, its personalized with a burned drawing of our house in the top. Our last name is burned in the lower left corner on an oak wood top. Hi Glenn! I thought you would like to know that the cross, the box, and the ensemble are a big hit. Of course the cross is beautiful in the front of the sanctuary. Our priest dedicated and blessed it at all three services on 11/28 (Advent 1). Before the first two services, I had the cross in the box prominently displayed in the foyer. Everyone expected the cross to be brass & beautiful, but nobody was prepared for the box. Everyone was "coo coo for cocoa puffs" over it. As I explained the various woods, the hinge and other features, their eyes got bigger and their jaws dropped lower. I must say, your box "opened with rave reviews!! I personally want to thank you for your great work and also for your willingness to take on the project. I really do hope it was an enjoyable experience for you.
