Example

Black Walnut

The coloration of Black Walnut can be light to chocolate brown. I tend to select  lumber with darker colors.

Cherry

The heartwood in Cherry is red in color, and the sapwood is light pink. I tend to select lumber toward the red end of the spectrum.

Wormy (Ambrosia) Maple

Wormy maple aka ambrosia maple, comes from regular soft maple trees that have been infested by the ambrosia beetle. The small beetle bores a network of tunnels and short galleries called cradles. A fungus is responsible for the black and gray streaks that accompany each tunnel and adjacent wood. The streaks add a unique look to this hardwood without affecting its structural integrity.

Curly Maple

Curly, aka “flame” maple, is a feature of maple in which the growth of the wood fibers is distorted in an undulating optical reflectance pattern, producing wavy lines known as "flames"

Birdseye Maple

Birdseye maple has a distinctive pattern that resembles tiny, swirling eyes disrupting the smooth lines of grain.

Red Oak

Red Oak coloration runs from a light tan to pink with a reddish tinge. The wood is predominantly straight grained and coarse textured.
