The following is a step by step photo album of my box construction method. This works for any size and is comonly known as a lap or but box joint construction.
Cut top and bottom to desired interior dimensions
Interior ends top and bottom cut to desired height.
Glue and clamp to each end top and bottom
Glue and clamp top and bottom sides
Glue and clamp exterior ends top and bottom
Sand edges and add a top bottom exterior boards. (Picture not shown)
Using the same wood carefully cut a groove in the center
Cut grooved board in half then glue and clamp
Measure length for hinge divide in an equal amount of pieces. (odd amount, 1 -1.5 inches) Example: 11 inch edge divide by 11 for 11 1 inch pieces. Be sure to number each piece as you cut them to keep the grain intact throughtout the hinge.
Drill each piece to remove the excess glue.
Insert steel rod thru all pieces in the correct order.
Cut out an equal distance for the hinge from the back top and bottom of the box.
Glue every even piece for clamping to the bottom.
Glue every odd piece for clamping to the top.
Use chisle to break apart.
Use chisle to break apart.
Use chisle to break apart.
Cut small amount from lip to allow for hinge swing.
Sand hinge edges to allow a smooth fit.
Sand hinge corners top and bottom.
Insert steel rod and finish.
